A Walk for Education | October 14, 2017 | Houston, TX
On October 14, 2017, NSBE Houston Professionals hosted their annual event, A Walk for Education at Lincoln Community Center in the historic Houston community, Acres Homes. The event was coordinated by the Collegiate Initiative arm of NSBE HP, led by KeAndrea’ Jordan and Bayo Famoriyo.
Over 100 volunteers showed up to engage with the local community by giving out information on ACT/SAT, College Admissions, and the importance of a STEM education. A plethora of volunteers consisted of collegiate students from Prairie View A&M University, University of Houston, Rice University, Alabama A&M University, University of Texas at Tyler, Lone Star College – Cy-Fair, amongst others. “Our goal was to assemble 100 volunteers, and we knocked it out the park! We are indebted to the NSBE collegiate members for having the spirit and drive, to want to impact their communities”, said NSBE HP Programs Chair, Rashad Morgan.
The day began with a welcome, over breakfast, before transitioning into the “walk”. The walk itself, covered over 2 miles in Acres Homes. Afterwards, the community came back to the center to interact with current and future STEM professionals, and enjoy pizza. Music by DJ King Ace, and a performance by NSBE HP Chair, Jessica Terry were new and welcomed additions to this year’s festivities. The attendees also enjoyed games of basketball, and board games.
Over the years, A Walk for Education has grown tremendously, and has impacted a multitude of Houston communities. A huge Thank You is owed to Cedric Johnson, Harris County Precinct One, and Lincoln Community Center for opening their doors for this cause.
