NSBE Day at NASA | July 14, 2017 | Houston, TX
In an effort to kick off a new pilot initiative, “NSBE Day @,” the Houston Professionals Chapter was the first to take the plunge and worked with NASA to give students a “day in the life” experience! On July 14, Houston Professional Member volunteers took forty Houston area high school students and sixteen chaperones on a tour of NASA hosted by the NSBE Space Professionals Chapter led by Dr. Robert Howard!
Everyone had the opportunity to meet and converse with African American NASA employees who provided valuable insight on their daily job disciplines, available internships, and other opportunities afforded to students with Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) backgrounds. These leaders at NASA stressed the need for educated, prepared, and creative thinkers to participate in future space explorations.
The tour allotted all participants to tour various divisions at NASA such as the HERA (Human Exploration Research Analog) Facility, Mission Control Center, Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Facility, Food Lab, Life Support & Spacesuits Facility, International Space Station (ISS) Research & Operations Facility, and Curation Lab.
We thank Dr. Robert Howard and all of his fellow colleagues at NASA for their efforts in helping us give a real life “Hidden Figures” experience to share with our future engineers and leaders!
